Ryan Avery

He has salt water in his DNA. He was on the yacht with his father, a keen sailor, while still in a stroller.

A Sea Point native, Ryan stuck just as close to the water, and by age 13 started sailing competitively in little Optimists and Dabchicks. In the last eight to ten years, Ryan has competed with Janine, first his girlfriend and now his wife, having moved onto a Sonnet, then a Fireball and now a 16ft Hobie. Ryan modestly explains that the two of them “have been finding the podium quite frequently.”

Professionally too, after a quick post-matric foray into bartending and the Hotel School, Ryan found his passion in the yachting world. First, he was a sailmaker with one of the best in the business. After about eight years he switched to the quality control aspect for an international sailmaking concern. By late 2015, Boating World spotted Ryan’s expertise in the sailing industry and brought him on board the sales sailing division of the business.
