CATCHING A FISHING THRILL OFF CAPE COASTLINE

22 Mar 2011

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of having that “extra” big one on the line no matter how often it happens and even the most seasoned angler still gets excited. Boating World client and charter owner/operator Sean Amor delights in every catch - whether his own or those of the people he takes fishing along the vast expanse of our Cape coastline.

That old familiar feeling arrived with a vengeance recently when Sean and two companions were trawling about 33 nautical miles south west of Hout Bay. Conditions were bumpy thanks to a south-westerly wind churning up the bottle green 19.5 degree waters - when three huge fish took their lines.  Sean says the one fought so hard it bent the hook straight and got away but the others were not so lucky!

Within a relatively short space of time, using a Tinker Lure and a Halco lure on 80lb line respectively, crewman Greg Grant and Joachim each found themselves with a real fight on their hands. It took Greg around two hours to land his 105kg Big Eyed Tuna, narrowly missing the All Africa record by less than 500g. Joachim’s fish was not far behind at a respectable 103kg.

While Sean was excited at their success he was not too surprised as Big Eyed Tuna traditionally swim with Longfin Tuna some of which they had already caught on spinners earlier that day.

An old hand at the game Sean understands the ways of the seas and the many fish waiting to take the bait . His company Hooked on Africa Fishing Charters which started 13 years ago, attracts loads of tourists looking for the ultimate experience – either through Bottom fishing, fly fishing and of course seeking out the elusive bill fish.

He’s had everyone on board from corporate clients, English cricketers to the King of Jordan - searching for Snoek, Yellow Tail, Tuna and other catches. Top electronic equipment on each of his five boats gives every angler the maximum opportunity of finding those fishing hot spots.

Several International Game Fishing (IGFA) records have been broken in the process including the 2005 South African record for a Big Eyed Tuna which was caught by Sean’s partner Stuart Henshilwood which weighed in at 122kg!

And not forgetting the rather unusual 1.3kg Jacapeva record - broken by American visitor George Bogowen.

There’s never a dull moment when Boating World clients do what they do best on the water!
