PASSING ON THE BATON IN THE LEVY FAMILY WATERSKI ACHEIVMENTS

10 Feb 2012

The old adage “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” certainly rings true in the Levy family as the fourth generation takes to the water and they look as if they were born for it.

Club Marine’s Caryne, Russell and family spent a relaxed weekend at the Vaal River recently where the children both skied behind the Malibu boat on their own for the first time. Rachel and David were delighted with their progress from inflatable Eezi Skis to proper junior ski trainers and they are well on their way to thoroughly enjoying their watersport.

They’ll not lack for good teachers coming from the Levy line whose remarkable watersport achievements are legendary.

Great grandfather Arnie Levy started Arnies Boatel on the Vaal River when Derrick (of Boating World fame) was very young and every member of the family learned to ski. Arnie’s interest in boating soon turned into passion especially in the area of Hydroplane Racing where he achieved Springbok colours.

Naturally his enthusiasm rubbed off on Derrick who represented South Africa in Ski Racing (competing in all major international tournaments) and winning the Italian Grand Prix on Lake Como. He has also represented the country in Barefoot Skiing and Boat Racing.

Derrick is a qualified skipper for motor yachts and boats under one hundred tons, invaluable as a retailer and broker of new and pre-owned motor yachts and mid-size cruisers. As a forty-year industry veteran his specialised boating knowledge and expertise ensures the best possible advice for any boater and particularly Boating World’s prospective buyers.

A closer peek at the family tree and the children will soon spot their uncle Dean Levy who runs the very successful Boating International in Edenvale. At the tender age of 11 Dean had already achieved Senior Springbok colours for barefoot skiing and he spent several months overseas in training for international events.

Even closer to home, mom Caryne got Springbok colours for barefooting at age 13 and she also attended ski training school in America  greatly enhancing her natural talent. Caryne is the managing member of Club Marine Insurance in Dainfern Johannesburg, well-known to thousands of boaters around the country.

Both she and Dean have spent their entire lives on the water -  as dedicated skiers who won numerous awards and accolades along the way to reaching the top of their sport and which set them up for their careers in the industry.

Rachel and David were lucky enough to learn to ski behind a Malibu boat which offers revolutionary performance, technology and design.

Numerous stunning features include a 6.5" touch screen for control of a myriad of safety and performance systems giving the smoothest possible ride for both learners and advanced skiers.
