U21 WATERSKI CHAMPIONSHIPS WINNERS ANNOUNCED

29 Feb 2012

Boating World would like to congratulate GJ Visser, Eamon vd Merwe, Tyron Stroberg and Gabriella Viljoen for being selected to represent South Africa at the EA U-21 championships to be held at Lake Grappa, Kakamas from the 29 March   - 1 April 2012.

This is the first of two major international waterski  tournaments taking place in South Africa this year and skiers from across Europe and Africa will soon be travelling to this little piece of heaven tucked away in the heart of the exquisite Green Kalahari.

There they will go head to head against each other in hot competition while enjoying the warm, friendly hospitality of fabulous managing couple Marica and Gerrit Visser.  This stunning venue is perfect for hosting team events, weddings or simply just getting away from it all (100 people maximum in venue).

Luxurious self-catering chalets overlook breathtaking views of the 800m man-made lake which is ideal for serious competitive skiing or even just learning how to slalom ski. Visitors can also visit the majestic Augrabies waterfalls only 20kms away, go horseriding, quadbiking, fishing or paddling or just relax with a glass of the finest wines around.

Take a trip to see some of the world’s best skiers in action. Lake Grappa is easily accessible with a daily flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town direct to Upington, followed by a 100km scenic drive along the Orange River wine route to the table grape community of Marchand.

The second international event is the bi-annual All African Championships which takes place at another scenic site — the Satellite Dam (near Albert Fall Dam, Pietermaritzburg) from the 6th to the 9th April 2012, which is also set to be a humdinger of a skiing competition!

And for those of you still in the early stages of waterskiing fun did you know that KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province hold regular mini-league competitions. The mini leagues are aimed at bridging the gap between recreational skiers and tournament skiers.

These are fun-filled events where SA top skiers as well as novice skiers run through the slalom course and compete on a handicap system! Any skier may enter, no matter what level of skiing they are at. Come out, ski and enjoy this awesome watersport with them!
